He spoke to the United Nations in 1974. He also met with world leaders like Queen Elizabeth II. 
His time as leader was not always easy. The country faced economic problems and a deadly famine in 1974. Some people felt his government was too strict. He even created a one-party system in 1975. 

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a central figure in the creation of Bangladesh. He served as the nation's founding president and its prime minister. He is widely known by the honorific title Bangabandhu, which means "Friend of Bengal." 
Mujib was born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara. He came from an aristocratic Bengali Muslim family. His father, Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, was a law clerk and a landowner. 
His political journey began during the final years of the British Raj. He studied liberal arts and political science in Calcutta. 
In 1970, Mujib achieved a massive political victory. His party, the Awami League, won Pakistan's first general election.

On August 15, 1975, Mujib was assassinated in a coup d'état. The event took place at his residence in Dhanmondi. Most of his family members were also killed during this event.
