Hussain Muhammad Ershad was a significant figure in the history of Bangladesh. He served as the nation's President from 1983 until 1990. Ershad was both a military officer and a politician. He holds the distinction of being the longest-serving male head of government in Bangladeshi history. His leadership involved major changes to the country's laws, economy, and religion.
Ershad's early life began in 1930 in Dinhata, which was then part of British India. He was born into a Bengali Muslim family. His father, Mokbul Hossain, was a lawyer who served a local Maharaja. After the Partition of India in 1948, Ershad's parents moved to East Bengal. Ershad studied at Carmichael College before graduating from Dhaka University in 1950. He joined the Pakistan Army in 1952 after completing training in Kohat.
His military career saw him rise through many important roles. In 1969 and 1971, he commanded the 3rd and 7th East Bengal Regiments. During the Bangladesh War of Independence, he was held as a prisoner of war in West Pakistan. He returned to the new nation of Bangladesh in 1973 following the Simla Agreement. Later, President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman appointed him as the Adjutant General. After the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, Ershad continued to rise. He eventually became the Chief of Army Staff with the rank of lieutenant general.
Ershad took control of the government through a bloodless coup on 24 March 1982. A bloodless coup means power is seized without active fighting or war. During this event, he replaced President Abdus Sattar and imposed martial law. Martial law is a system where the military takes control of the government. He suspended the Constitution, which is the supreme set of laws for a country. Ershad officially declared himself President in 1983.
As President, Ershad implemented several major reforms. He supported the Land Reforms Ordinance of 1984, which gave new rights to tenants. He also worked to privatize nationalized industries, moving them from government control to private owners. Ershad expanded the national highway system to improve infrastructure. In 1985, he helped found the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, known as SAARC. This organization helps neighboring countries work together on politics and economics.
Ershad's political methods were often controversial. In 1986, he founded the Jatiya Party to participate in elections. He won the 1986 presidential election, but many people believed the results were not fair. They accused his government of voting fraud and other malpractices. In 1988, he led the parliament to make Islam the state religion. This was a major change because the original constitution was secular. Secularism means the government remains neutral toward different religions.
His later years in power were marked by intense social unrest. Large protests and strikes broke out across the country. In 1987, a general strike led to the deaths of eight people. In 1988, violence related to local council elections resulted in 80 deaths. Many opposition leaders, including Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia, organized mass movements against his rule. These uprisings eventually forced Ershad to resign from the presidency in 1990.
After leaving the presidency, Ershad remained active in politics. He became a Member of Parliament for the Rangpur-3 constituency in 1991. He won re-elections in all the general elections that followed. Ershad lived until 14 July 2019. His career illustrates the complex relationship between military leaders and political systems in Bangladesh.
