Autonomy

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Autonomy is the power to make your own choices. It means you can decide things without being forced. This idea is used in many ways. In a job, autonomy means workers have more say in their work. This often makes them feel happier. In a hospital, doctors must respect a patient's autonomy. This means they listen to what the patient wants.

Some groups of people use autonomy to rule themselves. This is called self-governance. It can help different groups live in peace. It can also help them work with a main government. Some groups have autonomy even without their own land. For example, some groups in Nordic countries have their own parliaments.

Many thinkers have studied this idea. A man named Immanuel Kant said autonomy is a moral right. He believed we must use our own minds to decide. He said following rules because they are right is very important. Another thinker, Jean Piaget, studied how children grow. He found that children move from following rules blindly to choosing rules themselves. This is a big part of growing up.
