An audiobook is a recording of a book being read out loud. You might hear the whole book from start to finish. This is called an unabridged version. Sometimes, a recording is a shorter version of the story. These are called abridgements.

Audiobooks allow people to listen to stories instead of reading them with their eyes. This makes books available to many different kinds of people. They have been used in schools and libraries since the 1930s.

How do these recordings work? It all started with the phonograph. Thomas Edison invented this machine in 1877. He hoped it could speak to blind people. At first, recordings were on round cylinders. These cylinders only held about four minutes of sound. Later, flat discs could hold about 12 minutes. These were still too short for long books. By the 1930s, new records could hold 20 minutes. This made it easier to tell long stories.

Many people helped grow the audiobook world. In 1931, the American Foundation for the Blind started a program. They wanted to help veterans and adults who could not see. They recorded things like the Bible and plays by Shakespeare. In 1952, two women named Barbara Holdridge and Marianne Roney started Caedmon Records. They were the first company to sell spoken recordings to the public. Their first release was poems by Dylan Thomas. This helped launch the whole industry in the United States.

Technology changed how we listen to books. In the 1970s, cassette tapes became very popular. People could use small players like the Walkman to listen on the go. They could even listen in their cars. In 1984, a company called Brilliance Audio found a way to record more on one tape. They used both channels of a stereo track to fit twice as much sound. This made long, unabridged books much cheaper. By 1987, the audiobook market was worth $200 million.

Today, the internet has changed everything again. In 1997, a company called Audible made a digital player. It was smaller and lighter than a Walkman. Digital books allow you to download stories instantly from the internet. You do not need to carry heavy tapes or discs anymore. You can carry many books on one small device. This connects to how we use computers and phones today. Audiobooks are now a huge part of how we enjoy stories.
