The way VLC works is through a design called modularity. This means the program is built from many small parts called modules.

These modules act like building blocks that the software can swap or add. For example, it uses different modules for video outputs, audio filters, and controls. This makes it easy to add support for new file types without rebuilding the whole thing. The core of the program creates a special map of these modules based on what you are trying to play. This allows it to handle many different compression methods and file formats. It can even play files that are still downloading or are slightly damaged.

The history of VLC began as a school project in France in 1996. Students at the École Centrale Paris started it to stream videos across their campus. At first, it was called the VideoLAN Client because it worked with a server. Over time, the project grew and changed into what we know today. In 1998, the code was rewritten from the very beginning. The project was officially released under a public license on February 1, 2001. The famous traffic cone icon comes from the networking students at that school.

VLC has many impressive technical facts and milestones. Version 1.0.0 was released on July 7, 2009, after thirteen years of work. Since then, many new versions have added amazing features. Version 3.0, released in February 2018, added support for 4K and 8K video. It also allows for 360-degree video and 3D audio playback. The software has become huge, reaching more than 6 billion downloads. In 2025, the project even showed off new ways to use AI for translation and subtitles. It is a very large project with contributors from all over the world.

You might already know how to use a video player on a phone or computer. VLC is like a super-powered version of those tools. It can do things like change a file from one format to another, which is called transcoding. It can also play DVDs that have encryption, which was a big deal for Linux users. If your video sound is not matching the picture, you can use special keys to fix the sync. You can even use it to record your computer screen. Whether you are watching a movie or listening to a song, VLC is built to handle it all.
