iTunes is a digital tool created by Apple to manage many kinds of media.

It works as a music player and a library for your computer. You can use it to play, download, and organize digital files. It can even rip songs from physical CDs to save them on your computer. This means it turns music from a disc into digital files you can keep. It also helps you manage mobile devices like the iPhone or iPad. For many years, it was a main way to connect these devices to a computer.

There are many ways the software works to keep things organized. Every song has metadata, which is extra information like the artist name or the album. iTunes uses this info to sort your music into neat columns. It can also use a service called Gracenote to find song names from CDs. The program has special tools like smart playlists that sort music automatically. You can tell it to play only certain types of songs, like Christmas music. It even has a feature called Genius that suggests new music based on what you like.

Apple first announced iTunes on January 9, 2001. It actually started as a program called SoundJam MP. A company named Casady & Greene made SoundJam in 1999. Apple bought it in 2000 and renamed it iTunes. Steve Jobs, the leader of Apple, helped introduce it to the world. The first version was called the "World's Best and Easiest To Use Jukebox Software." Over time, Apple added many new features to help it grow.

In 2003, Apple released the iTunes Store to let people buy digital music. At the start, the store had 200,000 tracks available. In its very first week, people bought over one million songs! Apple also released a version for Windows computers on October 16, 2003. By 2005, the program could handle videos and podcasts too. In 2011, Apple introduced iTunes in the Cloud to store music on their own servers. This made it easier to get your music on new devices.

Today, the way we use iTunes is changing. Some people felt the program became too large because it did too many different things. Because of this, Apple began splitting it into separate apps. On newer Macs, iTunes is replaced by Music, Podcasts, and TV apps. A tool called Finder now handles the device management parts. However, iTunes is still used on Windows computers for certain tasks. It is also still used for listening to audiobooks and podcasts.
