ATM

An automated teller machine, or ATM, is an electronic telecommunications device. It allows customers of financial institutions to perform many different financial transactions. These tasks include cash withdrawals, deposits, and funds transfers. Users can also use an ATM for account information inquiries, such as checking a balance.

These machines are vital because they allow banking at any time. This happens without the need for direct interaction with bank staff. In the United States, they are commonly called ATMs. In Canada, the term automated banking machine, or ABM, is also used. In British English, people may call them cashpoints or cash machines. Some ATMs are not operated by a bank and are called "white-label" ATMs.

Using an ATM involves a specific sequence of technological steps. First, the customer must be identified by the machine. This is usually done by inserting a plastic ATM card or another acceptable payment card.

Next, the user must complete an authentication process. This is done by entering a personal identification number, known as a PIN. The machine checks this PIN against a database at the financial institution or a chip on the card. Once the identity is verified, the machine can process the request. If a user withdraws money in a foreign country, the machine handles currency conversion. The money is converted using the financial institution's specific exchange rate.

There are many different types of ATM setups and locations. Some are smaller indoor machines located in convenience stores or busy areas.

Others are large machines installed on street corners. Some specialized machines even exist, such as gold-vending ATMs.

There are also mobile ATMs, which are installed in vans. These can be used to help people during emergencies, like after a hurricane.

The technology has also evolved from using paper vouchers to using magnetic stripe cards and microprocessors.

The history of the ATM began with several different inventions. In 1960, Luther Simjian invented the Bankograph. This was an automated deposit machine that accepted coins, cash, and cheques. However, it could not dispense cash to users. In 1962, Adrian Ashfield invented a card system to identify users securely. This was a major step toward modern security. In 1966, a Japanese device called the "Computer Loan Machine" dispensed cash as a three-month loan. It used a 5% annual interest rate. These early machines paved the way for the fully automated systems we use today.

The first machine widely considered to be a true ATM opened in London.

It was installed at Barclays Bank in Enfield on June 27, 1967. An engineering team led by John Shepherd-Barron created this machine. It was called the De La Rue Automatic Cash System, or DACS. Users started transactions by inserting paper cheques marked with carbon-14. This made the cheques readable by the machine. Later models used a four-digit PIN. The DACS machine was very competitive. It beat the Swedish Bankomat machine by only nine days. This period marked the start of the global ATM era.

In the United States, the development of the networked ATM was led by Donald Wetzel.

He worked for a company called Docutel. In 1969, Chemical Bank installed a prototype ATM in New York. This machine was initially called a "Docuteller." At first, bank executives were worried about the high costs. They also worried that customers would not trust machines with money. However, a marketing test with four machines proved they were reliable. Customers even paid a fee to use them. By 1974, Docutel controlled 70 percent of the U.S. market. This proved that networked banking was the future.

Security technology has been a major part of ATM development. In 1965, engineers at Smiths Group developed the idea of a PIN stored on a card. James Goodfellow is credited with this important patent. This allowed the machine to verify a customer without a human being present.

Later, Mohamed Atalla invented the hardware security module, called the "Atalla Box."

This system encrypted PIN and ATM messages. It used encryption to make sure telephone links were secure. This protected the data as it was sent to remote locations for verification. These security layers are what allow people to trust machines with their money.

Today, the ATM industry is a massive global system. The ATM Industry Association reports there are close to 3.5 million ATMs installed worldwide.

These machines connect banking, telecommunications, and security engineering. However, the way we use them is changing. The use of ATMs is gradually declining in many places. This is happening because more people are using cashless payment systems. Even as digital payments grow, the ATM remains a key part of the global financial infrastructure.
