Ataxia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ataxia is a sign that the body lacks order. It happens when parts of the nervous system do not work right. This makes it hard to move muscles on purpose. It can change how a person talks or moves their eyes.

One main cause is a problem with the cerebellum. The cerebellum is a part of the brain. It helps coordinate smooth movements. If the cerebellum has trouble, movements may be irregular. A person might struggle with balance. They may walk with a wide base. Some people may stagger or lurch from side to side. They might even fall down. Some people feel afraid of falling.

Another type is sensory ataxia. This happens when the body loses proprioception. Proprioception is the sense of where our body parts are. This can happen if the spinal cord has trouble. A person might walk with heavy steps. They may also feel unsteady in the dark.

Ataxia can have many causes. Some causes come from things like alcohol or certain drugs. It can also come from a lack of Vitamin B12. Some types are passed down in families.
