During this time, the Yamato rulers grew very strong. They ruled from a place called Yamato Province. They took control of many clans across the land. This helped the country become more united under one leader. The name of the country also changed during these years.

New ideas and ways of living arrived from far away. Buddhism was a very important new religion. It changed how people thought and lived.

Leaders like Prince Shōtoku Taishi helped spread these new ideas. He was a very smart man who loved Chinese books. He built many Buddhist temples to honor the new faith. He also sent students to China to learn more. These students often stayed in China for many years. They brought back new ways to run a government.

In the year 645, a major event changed everything. A group led by Prince Naka no Ōe took control. This event is called the Isshi Incident. It led to the Taika Reform, which means "great change."

This reform changed how the land was used. Before, big clans owned most of the land. After the reform, the state took control of the land. This helped the central government become much more powerful. The country was also divided into provinces and villages.

New laws were written to keep things organized. These laws were part of the ritsuryō system. This system used two types of codes. One code was for punishments called ritsu. The other was for running the government called ryō.

Life for most people was based on their jobs. Society was organized into different occupation groups. Most people worked as farmers to grow food. Others were fishers, weavers, or potters. Some people were even specialized armorers or artisans.
