Percival began his military life during the First World War. He joined the army in 1914 as a private. He rose quickly through the ranks to become a captain. In September 1916, he was badly wounded by shrapnel in France. For his bravery during this time, he won the Military Cross.

He also won the Distinguished Service Order later in the war. He was known as a very efficient soldier. After the war, he served in Russia and Ireland. His time in Ireland was very difficult and controversial. Some people accused him of being too harsh to others.

In the years between the two big wars, Percival studied a lot. He went to the Staff College to learn how to lead. He also spent time at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich.

During this time, he met a mentor named Sir John Dill. Dill thought Percival was a very quick and accurate worker. Percival also worked as a staff officer in West Africa. He spent several years learning about different ways to run an army. These years helped him move up to higher ranks.

In the 1930s, Percival worked in Malaya. He was a high-ranking officer there. He noticed that the defenses in Singapore needed more work.

Percival warned that an attack might come from the north. He thought the Japanese might land in Thailand to attack. He even sent his ideas to the War Office in London. He wanted to build more defenses to keep the area safe. This showed he was thinking ahead about possible dangers.

During the Second World War, Percival led many troops in the Malayan campaign. This was a very hard job for him. The Imperial Japanese Army invaded the area. Eventually, the British and Commonwealth forces had to surrender at the Battle of Singapore.

This surrender was a huge moment in British history. Some people say the defeat happened because the troops did not have enough supplies. Others believe the leadership was the main problem. Regardless, the event changed how people saw Britain in East Asia.
