Lieutenant-General Arthur Ernest Percival was a prominent officer in the British Army.

He was born on December 26, 1887, in Hertfordshire, England. His father served as a land agent for a local estate. Percival attended school in Bengeo and later at Rugby. While he was not a top academic student, he excelled in sports. He was a skilled cricket and tennis player. He also competed in cross country running. He rose through the school's Volunteer Rifle Corps to the rank of colour sergeant.

Percival's professional military career began in 1914 during the First World War. He initially enlisted as a private in the Officer Training Corps. Within five weeks of basic training, he was promoted to second lieutenant. By November 1914, he had reached the rank of captain. In 1915, he served in France with the Bedfordshire Regiment. During the Battle of the Somme in September 1916, he was wounded by shrapnel in four places.

For his bravery during an assault near Thiepval, he was awarded the Military Cross. He later earned the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and a French Croix de Guerre.

Following the First World War, Percival served in several international conflicts. In 1919, he volunteered for the British Military Mission during the Russian Civil War. While serving in the North Russia intervention, he earned a bar to his DSO. He led a successful column during the Gorodok operation in August 1919. This action resulted in the capture of 400 Red Army troops. In 1920, he was deployed to Ireland during the Irish War of Independence. He served as a company commander and an intelligence officer in County Cork.

His service in Ireland was highly controversial and marked by intense conflict. Percival was known for his energetic counterinsurgency tactics and intelligence-gathering. He established bicycle infantry formations to act as fast-moving columns. However, he became one of the most hated British commanders in Ireland at the time. Several IRA prisoners accused him of using torture during interrogations.

One prisoner, Patrick Harte, died years later from a brain injury allegedly caused by a blow from a rifle butt. Percival also participated in reprisals, such as burning farms and businesses. He was even accused of shooting at farmers from an open car. These actions led to three assassination attempts against him by the IRA.

During the interwar period, Percival focused on professional military education. He attended the Staff College at Camberley from 1923 to 1924. He also studied at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich in 1930.

During his time at the Staff College, he met his mentor, Sir John Dill. Dill was a high-ranking officer who viewed Percival as a very quick and accurate worker.

With Dill's support, Percival moved through various commands, including service with the Nigeria Regiment in West Africa. He eventually rose to the rank of full colonel by 1936.

In the late 1930s, Percival held a significant position in Malaya. He served as the Chief of Staff to General Dobbie from 1936 to 1938. During this period, he began to recognize new strategic dangers. He realized that Singapore was no longer an isolated fortress.

Percival conducted an appraisal of potential attacks from the north. He warned the War Office that the Japanese might land in Thailand to attack Malaya from the "backdoor." He also supported plans to build fixed defenses in Southern Johore. These warnings showed he understood the changing nature of warfare in East Asia.

Percival's career reached a turning point during the Second World War. He was appointed to command the British Commonwealth forces during the Malayan campaign. This campaign faced a massive invasion by the Imperial Japanese Army. The conflict ended in a catastrophic defeat at the Battle of Singapore.

Percival was forced to surrender his forces to the Japanese.

This surrender was the largest of its kind in British military history. It significantly undermined Britain's military prestige and position in East Asia. Some historians, like Sir John Smyth, argue the defeat was due to under-funding and inexperienced troops rather than Percival's leadership alone.
