His journey into the military started many years before the big war. Guisan was born on October 21, 1874, in Mézières. He grew up in a French-speaking part of Switzerland. After he finished school, he studied at agricultural schools in France and Germany. He worked as a farmer in the Broye Valley for a while.

He joined the military in 1894 as a lieutenant. Over many years, he worked his way up through many different ranks. He became a corps commander in 1932, which was a very high rank.

When World War II began, things became very serious for Switzerland. In August 1939, the Swiss government needed a strong leader. They held a special vote to choose a general for the country. This rank is rarely used and is meant for times of national emergency. Guisan won the election with 204 votes out of 231.

His main job was to protect Swiss land and keep the country independent. He had to lead a large number of soldiers to prepare for danger. At one point, up to 850,000 Swiss soldiers were ready to serve.

One of Guisan's most famous moments happened in July 1940. He traveled to a place called Rütli to speak to his officers.

This place is very special to Swiss history. Guisan told the officers that Switzerland must defend itself against any invader. He said they should never surrender to Nazi Germany. He also created a plan called the National Redoubt. This plan focused on using the high Alps mountains to resist an attack. This strategy of deterrence helped keep the country from being invaded.

After the war ended, Guisan eventually left his command in 1945. He lived to be 85 years old and died in 1960.

Even an asteroid in space was named 1960 Guisan to honor him.
