The alphabet starts with two letters. These first two letters give the word for "alphabet" its name. Armenian is written from left to right.

At first, the alphabet had 36 letters. In the 13th century, two more letters were added. Later, a new way of spelling was made in the 1920s. This brought the total to 39 letters.
