Some ways of writing focus on consonants.

These writing systems are called abjads. In an abjad, the letters show consonant sounds. They do not show every vowel sound. The reader must figure out the vowels. This can be done by knowing the language.

Most abjads are "impure." This means they use extra marks to help. These marks are called diacritics. They show vowel sounds so the reader does not guess. For example, Arabic and Hebrew use these marks.

The abjad is a very old way to write. It may come from the Phoenician script. That script was simple and easy to learn. It used only a few dozen signs. Because it was easy, many people used it. It helped spread through the ancient world. This helped create many other scripts. The Greek alphabet grew from the Phoenician abjad. The Greeks added letters for vowels to stop confusion. This made the script work better for their language. Today, the name abjad is used by many experts. It helps them group different types of writing together.
