Arjuna is a central hero in the ancient Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. He is the third oldest of the five Pandava brothers. Many traditions recognize him as the most distinguished among them. Arjuna is a divine-born hero because of his unique parentage. He is the son of Kunti and the god Indra. Indra is the king of the gods and the Vedic storm-sky god.

This divine connection is noted by the many sages and celestial beings present at his birth.

Arjuna's birth involved a specific custom known as niyoga. This practice allowed a man to father a child on behalf of another. King Pandu was of the royal Kuru dynasty and the Lunar dynasty. However, a curse rendered him unable to engage in sexual relations. To provide heirs, Kunti used a sacred mantra from the sage Durvasa. This mantra allowed her to invoke gods to beget children. When she summoned Indra, he assumed human form to approach her. Arjuna was born under the auspicious lunar constellation of Phalguna.

His education focused on the martial arts and warfare. He studied under the revered warrior-sage Drona. Arjuna quickly became Drona's most devoted and favorite student. One famous test demonstrated Arjuna's incredible concentration. Drona placed an artificial bird in a tree. While other princes saw the tree or the bird, Arjuna saw only the bird's head. This singular vision allowed him to master celestial weapons, or astras. These divine tools allowed him to manipulate elements like fire and wind.

Arjuna's life included many complex roles and journeys. During a period of exile, he entered into matrimonial alliances with three princesses. These were Ulupi, Chitrangada, and Subhadra. From these unions, he fathered four sons: Shrutakarma, Iravan, Babhruvahana, and Abhimanyu. He was also skilled in music and dance. He once used these talents to disguise himself as a eunuch teacher. This disguise helped him while teaching princess Uttarā of Matsya.

Before the great Kurukshetra War, Arjuna faced a profound moral dilemma. He saw his own relatives and teachers on the opposing Kaurava side. This caused him to become deeply demoralized. He turned to his maternal cousin, Krishna, for guidance. Krishna served as his charioteer during the conflict. Krishna imparted the knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita to him. This teaching covered the concepts of dharma, or duty, and karma. Arjuna even witnessed Krishna's cosmic divine form, known as the Vishvarupa.

During the war, Arjuna wielded a celestial bow named Gandiva. He was responsible for the deaths of several formidable foes. These included the warriors Bhishma and Karna. Karna was Arjuna's main rival and later revealed to be his elder half-brother. After the war, Arjuna helped his brother Yudhishthira consolidate his empire. This was done through the Ashvamedha ritual. His life ended after a final journey to the Himalayas. The Kuru dynasty continued through his grandson, Parikshit.

Arjuna is known by many different epithets and names. The word Arjuna can mean white, clear, or silver. He is called Savyasāchī because he is ambidextrous. This means he can shoot arrows with both hands equally. He is also called Gāṇḍīvadhārī, the holder of the Gandiva bow. Other names include Dhanañjaya, meaning one who conquered wealth. His story is preserved in many versions of the Mahabharata. These include Northern and Southern recensions. Scholars like Vishnu Sukthankar have worked to create critical editions of these texts.
