Later, Aristoxenus became a student of Aristotle. He wrote many books about life and music. He wrote about 453 books in total. Most of these books are lost today. We only have parts of some books. One important book is called "Elements of Harmony." It is a book about music.

Aristoxenus had new ideas about sound. Many people before him used math to study music. They used math ratios to judge notes. Aristoxenus did not agree with them. He said we should use our ears to judge music. He believed hearing was the best way to learn. He thought we use our ears to judge the size of a sound. He also thought we use our minds to understand its power. He wrote about twenty-eight laws for how melodies move. His ideas helped people think about music in a new way.
