Aristida is a group of grasses.

There are about 300 species in this group. They live all over the world. You can find them in warm and dry places. Many people call them wiregrass or needlegrass. This is because of their special parts. Each tiny flower has three awns. An awn is a long, thin bristle.

These bristles grow near the tip of the flower. In some kinds, the awns are very long. They can grow up to 10 cm. The stems of these grasses grow up or stand straight. The leaves can be flat or rolled up. These grasses live in many places. They grow in the sandhills of the Carolinas. They also grow in parts of Australia and Africa. These plants help us learn about the land. Farm animals often avoid eating them. If there is too much of this grass, it shows overgrazing. Overgrazing is when animals eat too much of the plants in a field.
