These mountains sit between the Serchio and Magra rivers. To the northwest, you will find the Garfagnana and Lunigiana areas. The name comes from an ancient tribe called the Apuani Ligures. People know these mountains for their famous Carrara marble.

This marble is very special to the region. Some groups now work to protect the land. The No Cav movement wants to stop marble quarrying. They worry about the impact on the environment.

These mountains began as sea sediments a long time ago. This happened during the middle Triassic period. This was even earlier than the rest of the Apennines. Over many years, these sediments turned into limestone, dolomite, sandstone, and shale. About 25 million years ago, harsh pressure changed the limestone. This pressure turned the stone into Carrara marble. This marble is named after the nearby city of Carrara. Erosion also helped shape the land into a jagged karst topography.

Many different animals call these mountains their home. You might see mammals like squirrels, foxes, and badgers. Other animals include moles, hares, martens, weasels, and polecats. Hazel dormice also live in the area. The mountains are home to over 300 species of birds. You can look up and see a golden eagle. Other birds include the peregrine falcon and the buzzard. You might also spot a kestrel or a common raven. Some birds, like the red-billed chough, live here too.

Many birds visit the mountains only for a short time. These are called migrant species. You might see a common nightingale or a cuckoo. Other visitors include the black redstart, red grouse, and wryneck. The wallcreeper and alpine swallow also fly through. Some birds stay all year long. These include tits and various passerines. You can also find the great spotted woodpecker and the green woodpecker. They are well distributed across the mountain range.

There are many tall peaks to find in the Apuan Alps. Monte Pisanino is the highest peak of all.
