They sit between the Serchio and Magra rivers. Many rivers flow near these peaks. The name comes from an old tribe called the Apuani Ligures. These mountains are famous for Carrara marble.

Long ago, sea mud turned into stone. Hard pressure changed this stone into marble. This happened about 25 million years ago. Some people want to stop marble mining. They want to protect the land. Many animals live in these mountains. You might see foxes, badgers, or squirrels. Many birds live here too. There are over 300 kinds of birds. You can see eagles and owls in the sky. Some birds stay all year. Other birds fly here for a short time. The highest peak is Monte Pisanino. Other tall peaks include Monte Tambura and Monte Cavallo. These mountains have a jagged look. This is because of erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears down rock.
