ANZUS is a security agreement between three nations. These countries are Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

The group was formed to keep the Pacific region safe. The members agreed to help each other if an armed attack occurred. They also promised to talk about safety matters together. This pact helps the nations act as a team. It is a way to protect their shared peace.

The treaty works through many different steps. First, the members agree to follow the goals of the United Nations. They promise not to use force against others unless they must defend themselves. The members must keep their ability to resist an attack. If one country is attacked, the others see it as a danger to their own safety.

They then work together to meet that common danger. Foreign ministers also meet in a special council to discuss the treaty.

This agreement started during a time called the Cold War. In 1950, leaders like Percy Spender from Australia looked for new partners.

They wanted to make sure the Pacific stayed stable. The United States joined the pact after the Korean War began in 1950. The treaty was signed in San Francisco on September 1, 1951. It officially started working on April 29, 1952. This helped all three lands feel more secure.

History shows that the three nations worked together for many years. They provided help during the Vietnam War between 1963 and 1975. However, a big change happened in 1984 and 1985. New Zealand wanted to be a nuclear-free zone.

Because New Zealand would not allow nuclear-powered ships, the United States suspended them from the pact in 1986. This caused a split in the original three-way group. Australia and the United States stayed in a full alliance.

Today, the relationships between these countries are changing again. New Zealand and the United States started a strategic partnership in 2010.

In 2012, the United States allowed New Zealand warships to visit its bases again. Australia and the United States still work very closely together. They hold annual meetings called AUSMIN to discuss defense. They also practice military exercises and share important information. This helps them stay ready for the future.
