Australia, New Zealand, and the United States joined together. They wanted to keep the Pacific region safe. This group was called ANZUS. The leaders promised to help each other if an armed attack happened. They also agreed to talk about safety in the Pacific.

For many years, the three lands worked as a team. They even helped during the Vietnam War. But things changed in the 1980s.

New Zealand wanted to be a nuclear-free zone. They made rules to stop ships with nuclear power from entering their waters. The United States used many nuclear-powered ships. This caused a big disagreement. Because of this, New Zealand was partially suspended from the pact in 1986.

Even so, the countries have worked to fix their ties. The United States let New Zealand warships visit its bases again in 2012. Australia and the United States still have a strong bond. They still hold meetings and do military exercises together to stay ready.
