These nations promise to help each other stay safe. Most alliances are for defense. This means if one country is attacked, its allies will help.

Some alliances are public. Others are secret. From 1870 to 1916, many alliances were secret. Since the Second World War, alliances have changed. They often act as a deterrent. A deterrent is something that stops others from acting.

Alliances can have problems. Some small countries might "free-ride." This means they let larger countries do all the work. Allies may also fear abandonment. This is when an ally does not come to help. They might also fear entrapment. This is when an ally gets pulled into a fight.

Some alliances are very old. The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance started in 1373. This was a deal between England and Portugal. They have stayed friends ever since. They have never fought each other. In the past, many groups formed to stop leaders like Napoleon. These groups helped keep peace in Europe for a long time.
