After World War II ended in 1945, Europe was split in two.

This split was called the Iron Curtain. It was a border that lasted until about 1990.

At first, the name was a way to describe real things. People built fences, walls, and watchtowers. They even used razor wire and minefields.

These things kept people in and information out. The name also meant that the two sides were very different. They had different ways of life and different governments.

A leader named Winston Churchill helped make the name famous. In 1946, he gave a speech in Missouri. He said an iron curtain had fallen across Europe.

On one side was the Soviet Union. Many small states were under its control. These states were part of the Warsaw Pact.

On the other side were many NATO members.

Eventually, the Iron Curtain began to fall. Many countries in the east changed. By 1991, the Soviet Union ended. Today, much of the old border is a green space for nature.
