He lived during the classical period. He was born in a town called Legnago. Later, he moved to Vienna to study music. A teacher named Florian Leopold Gassmann helped him. Salieri became a leader for music at a royal court. He wrote more than 35 operas. An opera is a stage play with music. He wrote songs in three different languages. One of his big hits was called Armida. It was a serious story about love and magic. He also wrote funny operas like La Fiera di Venezia. This show used singing and dancing together. Many other writers copied his new ideas. Salieri was also a great teacher. He taught famous musicians like Ludwig van Beethoven. Some people once told stories about him and Mozart. They said they were rivals. These stories were not true. Salieri and Mozart were likely respectful peers. Even so, the rumors were hard on Salieri. His music was not heard for a long time. But people began to study his work again in the late 1900s.
