Antlia is a group of stars in the southern sky. Its name means "pump" in Latin and Greek.

Constellation Antlia
Constellation Antlia

This constellation represents an air pump. It is a faint part of the sky. You can see it if you are south of 49 degrees north. It sits near the stars that make up the sails of a ship called Vela.

The stars in Antlia are often quite dim. This makes it a quiet place to look at.

Many stars in this area act in interesting ways. Alpha Antliae is an orange giant star. It is a suspected variable star, which means its brightness changes. S Antliae is an eclipsing binary star system. This is a pair of stars that pass in front of each other.

As they pass, the system looks dimmer to us. These two stars are very close together. They share a common envelope of material. One day, they will merge to become a single star.

An astronomer named Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille created this constellation. He worked in the 18th century. He lived at the Cape of Good Hope for two years. During this time, he found almost 10,000 southern stars.

He named his new constellations after scientific tools. He wanted to honor the Age of Enlightenment. He originally called it la Machine Pneumatique. This name honored the air pump made by Denis Papin.

Antlia holds many amazing objects. It covers 238.9 square degrees of the sky. This is about 0.579% of the whole sky.

There are two star systems with known exoplanets here. These are named HD 93083 and WASP-66. You can also find the NGC 2997 spiral galaxy. This galaxy has bright clusters of young stars. The Antlia Dwarf Galaxy is also found in this region. There is even a huge supernova remnant here.

Looking at Antlia helps us see how much is in space. It links to the history of science and tools. The name honors a machine that changed how we study air.

It also sits near the famous Argo Navis ship. This old group of stars was once very large. Lacaille split that huge ship into smaller parts. Now, Antlia stands on its own as a unique shape. It shows us how astronomers organize the stars.
