Anthony the Great was a famous Christian man from Egypt.

He lived a long time ago and is now called a saint. Many people call him the "Father of Monasticism." This is because he helped start the way of monks. Monks are people who live simple lives to focus on their faith. People have honored him for hundreds of years. His special feast day is on January 17.

People threw food over the walls to him. Later, he moved to a mountain near the Red Sea. He lived there for forty-five years. He was not always alone during this time. Many people came to visit him and asked for his help. They wanted him to be their guide in their spiritual life. This group of people grew into a large community of monks.

We know about Anthony because of a man named Athanasius. Athanasius was from Alexandria and wrote a book called the "Life of Anthony."

This book was very popular and was translated into Latin. The Latin version helped his stories spread to Western Europe. Some stories say Anthony faced strange trials in the desert. He might have seen creatures like a centaur. A centaur is half man and half horse.

Anthony's influence reached even the most powerful leaders. The Emperor Constantine even wrote to him to ask for prayers. Anthony was a very humble man and did not act surprised. He also helped people in the city of Alexandria. He visited those who were in prison during hard times.
