Annette Kellerman was a versatile Australian professional swimmer, vaudeville star, film actress, and writer.

She is remembered for her incredible aquatic skills and her influence on fashion. Kellerman was a pioneer in changing how women dressed for physical activity. She advocated for the use of one-piece bathing suits. At the time, women were expected to wear cumbersome pantaloons and dresses to swim. Her efforts to promote practical swimwear earned her the title of a "swimming suffragist." This movement helped pave the way for modern women's swimwear.

Kellerman's journey began with a personal challenge to her physical health. Born in Marrickville, Australia, in 1886, she faced leg weakness at age six. She had to wear steel braces to strengthen her limbs. To help overcome this disability, her parents enrolled her in swimming classes. She practiced at Cavill's Baths, a tidal swimming pool in Lavender Bay. By age 13, her legs were nearly normal. By age 15, she had mastered every swimming stroke and won her first race.

Her professional swimming career was defined by speed and endurance. In 1902, she won the ladies' 100 yards and mile championships in New South Wales. She set record times of 1 minute, 22 seconds and 33 minutes, 49 seconds. Kellerman also performed as an entertainer in various venues. She gave diving exhibitions at Melbourne baths and performed a mermaid act at Princes Court. She even worked at the Exhibition Aquarium, performing two shows a day swimming with fish in a glass tank.

Kellerman sought to test her limits against the world's most difficult waters. In 1905, at age 19, she became one of the first women to attempt a swim across the English Channel. Although she was stopped by a Dover ship pilot, she noted that she had the endurance but lacked "brute strength." This was a significant attempt following Austrian Baroness Walburga von Isacescu's attempt in 1900. Kellerman eventually defeated von Isacescu in a race on the Danube River. Her ability to compete at such a high level made her a global figure.

In the film industry, Kellerman became a major star with a focus on aquatic themes. She often played mermaids, a role she helped define through her costume designs.

In 1911, she appeared in the film *The Mermaid*, where she was the first actress to wear a swimmable mermaid costume. She also starred in the 1916 film *A Daughter of the Gods*. This was the first million-dollar film production in Hollywood. In that film, she was the first major actress to appear nude in a Hollywood production.

While many of her films are now considered lost, her impact remains. Her 1924 film, *Venus of the South Seas*, is the only feature film starring Kellerman known to exist in its complete form.

Beyond the water and the screen, Kellerman was a dedicated advocate for health and fitness. She was a lifelong vegetarian and eventually owned a health food store in California. She shared her knowledge through writing, publishing books such as *How to Swim* (1918) and *Physical Beauty: How to Keep It* (1919). She also wrote a collection of children's stories titled *Fairy Tales of the South Seas*. Her commitment to natural beauty and physical culture was a central part of her public identity.

Kellerman's legacy is preserved through many different honors and institutions. In 1908, Dudley A. Sargent of Harvard University studied 3,000 women and called her the "Perfect Woman" due to her physical attributes. Her name is featured on a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In Australia, a swimming complex in Marrickville and a street in Canberra are named in her honor. Even a thoroughbred mare, Annette K., was named after her. She lived to be 89 years old and died in Queensland, Australia, in 1975. Her remains were scattered in the Great Barrier Reef.
