Anne V. Coates was a famous British film editor. An editor is the person who pieces together film clips to tell a story. She had a very long career that lasted over 60 years.

She was known for her skill and her ability to find the rhythm in a movie. Many people call her an "actor's editor." This means she watched the actors very closely. She looked at the feeling in their eyes to decide when to cut the film. She believed that the performances were more important than just the action.

Editing is a job that requires making many quick decisions. Anne said that an editor must make thousands of choices every single day. If an editor hesitates too much, they will never finish the work.

She began her journey by fixing film prints for religious short films. This work involved splicing, which is joining film pieces together. This led her to a job as an assistant at Pinewood Studios. There, she learned how to help other editors make great movies.

Anne was born in Reigate, Surrey, in England in 1925. As a young girl, her first passion was actually horses. She once thought she might become a race-horse trainer.

Before she worked in movies, she worked as a nurse. She worked at a hospital in East Grinstead that focused on plastic surgery. She became interested in cinema after watching a movie called Wuthering Heights in 1939. This changed her path toward the world of film.

Her career included many famous and important movies.

She is most famous for her work on the epic film Lawrence of Arabia in 1962. For this movie, she won an Academy Award for Best Film Editing. She was also nominated for several other Oscars for films like Becket, The Elephant Man, In the Line of Fire, and Out of Sight. In 2007, she received a BAFTA Fellowship, which is a very high honor in Britain. In 2016, she even received an Academy Honorary Award for her lifetime of work.

Anne was part of a large film family. Her husband, Douglas Hickox, was a director. Her brother, John Coates, was a producer for films like The Snowman. Her sons, Anthony and James, both became directors. Even her daughter, Emma, followed in her footsteps as a film editor.

Anne was a leader in a time when very few women worked as editors. She proved that anyone with courage and skill can succeed in the film industry.
