John Schlesinger was a famous English director who shaped the world of film and theater. He made many movies, television shows, and stage plays. He was also an actor who appeared in several British productions. Schlesinger was a leading light of the British New Wave in the early 1960s. This was a group of filmmakers who changed how movies were made. He was also one of the few openly gay directors working in mainstream films. His work often focused on people who lived on the edges of society.

His career began with small steps and many different jobs. In the 1950s, he worked as an actor in shows like The Adventures of Robin Hood. He started directing in 1956 with a short documentary called Sunday in the Park. Later, he directed many episodes of television series like Danger Man. He eventually moved from acting to focus entirely on directing. He even worked as an associate director at the Royal National Theatre. He also directed beautiful operas at Covent Garden.

Schlesinger had a very interesting early life. He was born in 1926 in Hampstead, London. He grew up in a Jewish family. His father, Bernard, was a doctor who studied at Cambridge. His mother, Winifred, studied languages at the University of Oxford. During World War II, John served in the British Army. While he was with the Royal Engineers, he made films on the front line. He also performed magic tricks to entertain other soldiers.

He won many of the highest honors in the film world. In 1969, he won an Academy Award for Best Director for Midnight Cowboy. This film was a groundbreaking work of queer cinema. It was also one of the first mainstream American films to show gay relationships. He won four BAFTA awards throughout his long career. He also received a Golden Globe and was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Four of his films are on the list of the Top 100 British films.

His movies often captured specific places and feelings. Some of his early films, like Billy Liar, were set in the North of England. His film Darling showed the famous "swinging London" lifestyle. He also directed films set in the American countryside and big cities. Even in his later years, he stayed busy with television plays. He died in 2003 at the age of 77. He left behind a massive collection of work that people still study today.
