Anne Rice was a famous American author who wrote many different kinds of stories. She is best known for her books about vampires in a series called The Vampire Chronicles. People love her work because she wrote about vampires as elegant and sensitive characters. Her books have sold more than 100 million copies around the world. This makes her one of the most successful writers of modern times. Many of her stories have even been turned into movies and TV shows.

Rice's writing life involved many different steps and hard work. She started her professional career with the novel Interview with the Vampire in 1976. Before that, she wrote a short story that she later turned into a full book. She even used secret names, or pseudonyms, to write other stories. For example, she wrote erotic fiction using the names Anne Rampling and A. N. Roquelaure. She also wrote stories about the life of Jesus in the mid-2000s. These books were called Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana.

Rice was born in New Orleans on October 4, 1941. Her birth name was Howard Allen Frances O'Brien. She chose the name "Anne" on her first day of school. Later, she legally changed her name to Anne in 1947. She spent much of her youth in New Orleans, a city that appears in many of her books. Her family lived near St. Charles Avenue and the Irish Channel. Later in life, she moved to Texas and then to San Francisco, California.

Her life included both great success and very difficult moments. She was married to a poet named Stan Rice for 41 years. They had a daughter named Michele, who died of leukemia at age five. They also had a son named Christopher, who became a successful author too. Rice also dealt with a condition called obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. This made her worry a lot about germs and cleanliness. She worked through these hard times to continue her career.

Many famous writers helped shape the way Rice wrote her stories. She was inspired by authors like Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. She even read Stephen King's book Firestarter when she felt stuck. Her work connects to many different types of art. Some of her books became comic books or manga. Her first vampire book was even made into a famous film in 1994. Today, her stories continue to be told on television and in many other ways.
