Annalen der Physik

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Annalen der Physik is one of the oldest scientific journals dedicated to physics. A journal is a regular publication where scientists share new findings. This journal provides a space for original, peer-reviewed papers. Peer review is a process where other experts check the work for accuracy. The journal covers many different areas of science. These include experimental physics, which uses tools to test ideas. It also covers theoretical physics, which uses math to explain the world. Other areas include applied physics and mathematical physics. Currently, Stefan Hildebrandt serves as the editor-in-chief.

The journal has a complex way of organizing its history. It is actually the successor to two earlier publications. The first was published from 1790 until 1794. The second was published from 1795 until 1797. Throughout its life, the journal has used many different names. Some names included Wiedemann's Annalen der Physik und Chemie. The journal also used different abbreviations depending on the year. Before 2008, its abbreviation was Ann. Phys. (Leipzig). After 2008, the abbreviation changed to Ann. Phys. (Berl.).

Managing the journal has often been tied to its leaders. Early editors-in-chief included Friedrich Albrecht Carl Gren and Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert. Other long-serving editors were Johann Christian Poggendorff and Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann. Paul Karl Ludwig Drude also led the journal. A unique tradition occurred with each new editor. Every time a new editor took over, the volume numbering restarted at 1. This happened alongside a continuous numbering system. This system often caused confusion for readers. Because of this, people often called the journal by the editor's name. They might call it Gilberts Annalen or Poggendorfs Annalen.

After the time of Drude, the workload was split. The journal had different editors for different types of science. Wilhelm Wien and Eduard Grüneisen focused on experimental physics. Meanwhile, Max Planck served as a theoretician. Planck was an associate editor starting in 1895. During this era, the peer-review process was not yet a standard requirement. For example, Albert Einstein simply sent his manuscripts to Max Planck. Planck would then decide to publish them. This was a much more direct way of sharing science.

The history of the journal reflects the history of Germany. Originally, the journal was published in German. German was then a leading language for scientific writing. Between the 1950s and 1980s, it published in both German and English. In the 1970s, German authors began writing in English more often. They did this to reach a larger international audience. After German reunification in 1990, English became the only language used. The journal also faced many interruptions. Publication stopped between 1944 and 1946 due to World War II. It restarted in August 1946 after Soviet military authorities gave permission. From that time until 1992, the journal used co-editorship. One editor came from East Germany and one from West Germany.

Some of the most important discoveries in science appeared here. The journal's importance reached a peak in 1905. This was the year of Albert Einstein's "Annus Mirabilis" papers. These papers covered photons, Brownian motion, and mass-energy equivalence. He also published his special theory of relativity in 1905. Later, in 1916, he published the general theory of relativity. Other scientists made massive contributions as well. Gustav Kirchhoff published work on electrical circuits in 1847. Heinrich Hertz shared his work on the photoelectric effect in 1887. Max Planck published his work on blackbody radiation in 1901.

Today, the journal remains a significant part of the scientific community. After reunification, the journal was acquired by Wiley-VCH. In 2012, the journal underwent a major relaunch. This relaunch included a new editor and new contents. It also involved a change in the journal's scope. The editorial board was updated during this time as well. The journal is still tracked by many scientific reports. For instance, it has a 2024 impact factor of 2.5. This number helps scientists understand how much influence the journal has. It continues to be a key place for physics research.
