Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who transformed our understanding of the physical universe.

He is most famous for developing the theory of relativity. This work fundamentally changed how scientists view space, time, and gravity. Einstein also provided essential contributions to quantum theory, which studies the behavior of very small particles. His most famous discovery involves the relationship between mass and energy. This concept is expressed through a mathematical formula that is widely considered the most famous equation in the world. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. This honor recognized his services to theoretical physics and his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.

Einstein's scientific breakthroughs reached a peak during 1905, a year often called his "annus mirabilis" or miracle year.

During this time, he published four groundbreaking papers that addressed different physical phenomena. First, he outlined a theory regarding the photoelectric effect. This theory explains how light can knock electrons off a material. Second, he provided an explanation for Brownian motion, which is the random movement of particles in a fluid. Third, he introduced his special theory of relativity. This theory suggests that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers and that the speed of light is constant. Finally, he demonstrated that mass and energy are equivalent. This means that mass can be converted into energy and vice versa.

In 1915, Einstein expanded his work by proposing the general theory of relativity.

This theory extended his previous mechanical systems to include the force of gravitation. He showed that gravity is not just a force between objects, but a result of the curvature of space and time. In 1916, he published a paper describing the implications of this theory for the entire universe. This work introduced the cosmological constant, a term used in modeling the structure and evolution of the cosmos. This paper is viewed as a primary step in the development of modern theoretical cosmology. His research also touched upon the nature of light. He helped establish that light consists of individual particles called photons.

Einstein's early life was marked by a deep curiosity about the natural world.

He was born on 14 March 1879, in Ulm, within the German Empire. His parents were Hermann Einstein and Pauline Koch. As a young child, Einstein was slow to develop speech, which caused his parents some concern. However, a simple gift changed his life when he was five years old. His father showed him a compass, which sparked a lifelong fascination with electromagnetism. He realized that there must be something hidden behind the way things work. By the age of twelve, he was already teaching himself advanced mathematics, including algebra and geometry. He even discovered an original proof for the Pythagorean theorem before he turned thirteen.

His path to scientific greatness involved several different countries and institutions.

After moving to Switzerland, he enrolled in a mathematics and physics program at the federal polytechnic school in Zurich in 1897. He graduated in 1900 and later earned his PhD from the University of Zurich in 1905. For a time, he worked at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern. In 1914, he moved to Berlin to join the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He also became the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics in 1917. His life changed again in 1933 when Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany. Because of the persecution of Jewish people by the Nazi regime, Einstein chose to remain in the United States. He eventually became an American citizen in 1940.

During his later years, Einstein focused on complex problems that proved difficult to solve.

He worked extensively on statistical mechanics and quantum theory. He collaborated with Satyendra Nath Bose to develop Bose–Einstein statistics. Einstein also investigated the concepts of spontaneous emission and stimulated emission. These ideas later became the core mechanism behind the invention of the laser and the maser. Despite his many successes, he spent much of his final academic phase trying to create a unified field theory. He wanted to combine his theory of gravitation with electromagnetism into one single system. He also argued against the idea of fundamental randomness in quantum theory, famously stating that "God does not play dice." These efforts ultimately did not succeed and left him somewhat isolated from mainstream physics.

Einstein's legacy is visible in many different parts of modern science and culture.

The chemical element Einsteinium is named in his honor. His work on light and particles laid the groundwork for quantum electrodynamics and quantum optics. Even his political actions had a significant impact. On the eve of World War II, he signed a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This letter warned of a potential German nuclear weapons program and suggested the United States begin its own research. This eventually led to the Manhattan Project. Because of his immense impact on the world, Time magazine named him the Person of the Century in 1999.
