Annalen der Physik is a very old science journal. A journal is a regular book of new discoveries. This specific journal shares papers about physics. Physics is the study of how the world works. It covers many areas like math and experiments.

It has been around since 1799. This long history makes it a very important part of science. Today, Stefan Hildebrandt is the editor-in-chief.

Scientists use a special way to check new ideas. This is called peer review. Experts look at a paper to make sure it is correct. In the early days, this was not always done. For example, Albert Einstein sent his work to Max Planck. Planck then chose to publish those papers.

Now, the peer review process is a standard part of the journal. This helps keep the science in the journal very reliable.

This journal has a very long and changing history. It started with names like "Annalen der Physik" and "Wiedemann's Annalen der Physik und Chemie."

Early editors included Friedrich Albrecht Carl Gren and Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert. Other famous editors were Johann Christian Poggendorff and Gustav Heinrich Wiedemann. Paul Karl Ludwig Drude also served as an editor. Each new editor would restart the volume numbers at 1. People often called the journal by the editor's name.

Many big discoveries happened in these pages. In 1905, Albert Einstein published his "Annus Mirabilis" papers. These papers were about light, space, and mass-energy equivalence.

He also wrote about the general theory of relativity in 1916. Other scientists shared great work too. Gustav Kirchhoff wrote about electrical circuits in 1847. Max Planck published work on blackbody radiation in 1901. Heinrich Hertz wrote about the photoelectric effect in 1887.

The language used in the journal has changed over time. At first, most papers were written in German. From 1950 to 1980, it used both German and English.

After German reunification in 1990, it used only English. This change helped scientists from all over the world read it. The journal stopped publishing during World War II from 1944 to 1946. It later restarted with permission from Soviet military authorities in August 1946. Now, it is part of the Wiley-VCH group.
