arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Aniara is a famous science fiction poem. Harry Martinson wrote it in Sweden. He worked on it from 1953 to 1956. The poem is very long. It has 103 cantos, which are parts of a poem.

The story is about a large ship. It carries people away from a broken Earth. The ship was meant to go to Mars. But an accident happens. The ship hits an asteroid. This sends the ship far out of our solar system.

The people on the ship feel lost. They use a machine called the Mima. The Mima shows them scenes of far-off places. It helps them feel less lonely. But the machine also feels the sadness of the people.

Many people love this work. It has been turned into an opera and a film. It was even translated into twenty languages. The poem is so big that it inspired names in space. A star is named Aniara. A planet is named after Isagel, a person in the story.
