Angry Birds is a massive media franchise centered on a group of anthropomorphic, flightless birds.

These characters must defend their nest of eggs from a species of round, green pigs. While most entries in the series are physics-based puzzle games for mobile devices, the franchise has expanded into many genres. You can find Angry Birds in racing games, role-playing games, and even tile-matching games. Beyond digital screens, the brand includes merchandise, television shows, theatrical films, and even physical theme parks.

The core gameplay mechanism relies on physics to solve puzzles. Players typically use a slingshot to launch different birds at structures built by the pigs. This style of gameplay was inspired by a 2009 Adobe Flash game called Crush the Castle. In these games, the player must calculate the right angle and power to knock down buildings and hit the pigs. Some versions of the games use different mechanics, such as augmented reality in Angry Birds Action!. Other spin-offs, like Bad Piggies, shift the perspective to allow players to control the pigs instead.

The franchise is divided into many different types of media. There are primary puzzle games, such as the original Angry Birds and its successor, Angry Birds 2. There are also major spin-offs that explore different worlds, like Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Transformers. The television side includes various animated series. Some, like Angry Birds Toons, follow the main characters. Others, like Piggy Tales, use stop-motion animation to show the lives of the Minion Pigs. There are even educational series, such as The Rocket Science Show, which uses animation to teach facts about the Solar System.

The history of the franchise is a story of survival and massive growth. It began in 2009 when designer Jaakko Iisalo created the first game for Rovio Entertainment. At that time, Rovio was facing bankruptcy. The sudden success of Angry Birds saved the company and turned it into a global powerhouse. In 2010, the company released Angry Birds Seasons, which included holiday-themed updates. By 2012, the franchise was expanding through crossovers, such as the Angry Birds Rio game. This era marked the transition from a single successful game to a multi-platform brand.

Since its inception, the franchise has reached incredible heights of popularity. It is recognized as one of the highest-grossing media franchises in the world. The series has produced over twenty different game installments. The cinematic history includes The Angry Birds Movie, released in 2016, and its sequel in 2019. A third theatrical film, produced by Sega and Paramount Pictures, is scheduled for release on December 23, 2026. The brand's reach is also seen in physical locations, such as the Angry Birds Land in Särkänniemi and the Activity Park in Johor Bahru.

Many surprising collaborations have helped keep the characters in the public eye. Between 2011 and 2017, Angry Birds worked with dozens of companies for promotional tie-ins. These included partnerships with brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald's, and even the Lotus F1 Team. Some characters even appeared in unexpected places, like on a racing helmet worn by driver Heikki Kovalainen.

These crossovers allowed the birds to appear in different themes, such as breakfast cereals or even specific mobile phone advertisements.

Today, Angry Birds is part of a larger corporate ecosystem. In August 2023, Sega completed its acquisition of Rovio Entertainment. This connection has led to new ways for different worlds to meet. In March 2024, a crossover event brought Angry Birds characters into Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog games. Players could unlock birds in Sonic Dash and see Sonic-themed items in Angry Birds Friends. The characters have also appeared in other Sega titles like Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble and Two Point Museum. This integration shows how a mobile game franchise can become a permanent part of a larger gaming universe.
