The game world is made of voxels. Voxels are three-dimensional objects that look like cubes. These blocks represent various materials like dirt, stone, or wood. Players can also find water and lava. The core gameplay involves picking up and placing these blocks. Players mine blocks to collect them. Then, they place them elsewhere to build structures. Most blocks stay in place even without gravity.

Players use a crafting system to make many items. They can craft tools like pickaxes or shovels. These tools break certain blocks more quickly. They can also craft armor to mitigate damage from attacks. Some items have different tiers based on their materials. Higher-tier items are more effective and durable. Players can even use redstone to make mechanical devices. Redstone allows for the creation of electrical circuits and logic gates.

There are different ways to play the game. Survival mode requires players to gather natural resources. Players must manage a hunger bar by eating food. They also have a health bar to monitor. If health reaches zero, the player dies and respawns. Hostile mobs like zombies and skeletons appear at night. Creative mode offers a very different experience. In Creative mode, players have infinite resources. They can also fly freely and cannot take damage.

The game world is procedurally generated. This means the environment is created by a computer algorithm. A map seed determines the layout of the terrain. The world is divided into biomes, which are unique environments. These worlds are effectively infinite in traditional gameplay. The horizontal limit is a world border 30 million blocks away. The vertical space is limited by a bedrock layer at the bottom.

Players can travel through three different dimensions. The Overworld is the starting dimension with forests and mountains. Players can enter the Nether through an obsidian portal. The Nether is a dimension composed mainly of lava. It is home to mobs like ghasts and piglins. Players can also reach the End via an end portal. The End consists of islands floating in a dark void. An Ender Dragon guards the largest island there.
