In Africa, tool use began with the first human ancestors. The Aïr Mountains in Niger saw some of the earliest ironworking. In Egypt and Nubia, people built famous pyramids and towers. The Haya people of Tanzania even created carbon steel. They used high-temperature blast furnaces to make this strong metal.

Mesopotamia was a place of many first discoveries. The Sumerians invented writing to keep records. This led to the first laws called the Code of Hammurabi. They also used the first potter's wheel in the 5th millennium BC. Later, they made wheeled vehicles for transport. They used simple machines like the lever to lift water. A device called a shadoof helped with this task around 3000 BC.

Math and science were very important to the Mesopotamians. They used a base 60 number system. We still use this today for minutes and hours. They divided a circle into 360 degrees. Their math helped them build huge structures and track the stars. They even made a calendar using the phases of the Moon. This calendar had 12 lunar months. It helped lead to the Greek and Jewish calendars.

Egyptians were masters of building and making things. They used ramps to help move huge limestone blocks. These blocks could weigh about 3.5 tons each. They used simple machines like the wedge and the lever.

They also made paper from a plant called papyrus. This paper was sent all over the Mediterranean. One of their clever tools was the screw pump. It used a spiral tube to lift water from the Nile.

China was also a leader in science and technology. They made the first records of comets and solar eclipses. They even used an armillary sphere to study the sky.
