Because Armenia lacked sufficient scientific books and teachers, he traveled to the Byzantine Empire. He first studied under a mathematician named Christosatur in the province of Fourth Armenia. Later, he moved to Trebizond to study under Tychicus.

Anania spent eight years with Tychicus during the 620s or 630s. Tychicus possessed a vast library filled with Greek works on science, medicine, and history. Through this mentor, Anania gained what he called a "perfect knowledge of mathematics."

Anania's scientific philosophy was rooted in observation and rational thought. He was a representative of the Hellenizing School, meaning he used classical Greek sources. He often rejected mythology to explain how the natural world functioned.
