He wrote a big book about this in 1614. The book was called Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio. It had many pages of tables to help people. Napier had a very interesting life and travels. He was born in Edinburgh to Archibald Napier and Janet Bothwell. He went to St Salvator's College at age 13. His uncle, Adam Bothwell, told him to study in Europe. Napier traveled to mainland Europe to learn more. When he returned to Scotland in 1571, he knew Greek. This was a very rare skill at that time. He later bought a castle at Gartness in 1574. He eventually moved back to Merchiston Castle to live.

Napier's education was shaped by the religious strife of the Reformation. He enrolled at St Salvator's College in St Andrews at age 13. However, the quality of education there was poor at the time. His uncle, Adam Bothwell, suggested he study in mainland Europe.

Napier is best known for his discovery of logarithms. A logarithm is a way to find the exponent needed to produce a specific number. For example, if you have a base and a result, the logarithm tells you the power. This mathematical tool allows people to turn complex multiplication into simple addition. His major work on this was published in 1614. It was titled *Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descriptio*. This book contained 57 pages of explanation and 90 pages of tables.

His work with logarithms was quickly recognized by other scholars. In 1615, the English mathematician Henry Briggs visited Napier. They discussed re-scaling the logarithms to make them more practical. While they did not discover the mathematical constant *e*, they worked on the foundations of these tables.

The ability to use logarithms made hand calculations much faster. This advancement opened the door for future discoveries in dynamics and the study of the stars.

Napier also studied trigonometry on curved surfaces. He developed rules for triangles on a sphere, known as Napier's Rules of Circular Parts.

Beyond mathematics, Napier had deep interests in theology. He wrote a book called *A Plaine Discovery of the Whole Revelation of St. John*. In this work, he used mathematical analysis to study the Book of Revelation. He attempted to predict the date of the Apocalypse using these methods. He suggested the end of the world might occur in 1688 or 1700. This book was successful and was translated into Dutch and French. It showed how he applied his analytical mind to many different subjects.

John Napier died at the age of 67 from the effects of gout. He was originally buried in the kirkyard of St Giles in Edinburgh. Later, his remains were moved to an underground vault at St Cuthbert's Parish Church.
