physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Ammonium sulfate is a type of salt. It is a white powder. Many people use it to help plants grow. It is a common fertilizer for certain soils. This salt has 21% nitrogen. It also has 24% sulfur. Nitrogen is very important for plant growth. When this salt is in the soil, it lets out a small amount of acid. This helps change the pH balance of the soil.

This salt has many other uses too. It can be a food additive. It helps control acidity in flour and bread. It is also used in some vaccines. Scientists use it in labs to clean proteins. They use a way called precipitation. This means the salt makes proteins turn into solids.

People make this salt in different ways. One way is to mix ammonia with sulfuric acid. Another way is to use gypsum. Gypsum is a mineral. This salt can also be found in nature. It appears in volcanic vents. It can also come from coal fires. In 1981, people made 6,000 million tons of it.
