Long ago, this place was a small village. It had large farm lands that used water from the big Ambattur Lake. Today, it has changed into a bustling hub for many types of work. It is a very important part of the Chennai District.

One reason for its name comes from its history with temples. Ambattur is one of 108 Shakthi Sthals in the country. It is the fifty-first place in this special order. The name comes from the Tamil words for fifty-first village. This is because of the Amman temple for the goddess Durga. People also worship the goddess there in the form of Vaishnavi. This deep history connects the modern city to its ancient roots.

In the years after World War II, Ambattur began to change. A man named Sir Ivan Stedeford helped start a big factory there. He worked with A. M. Murugappa Chettiar to start a joint venture. This was the first agreement of its kind in South India after Independence. By 1951, they opened the TI Cycle factory in a mango grove. Soon, they began making Hercules India bicycles. This helped the area grow into a strong industrial zone.

Today, the economy is very large and active. The Ambattur Industrial Estate covers 1,430 acres. It is the biggest small-scale industrial estate in South Asia. About 1,800 different units work inside this estate.
