This phrase translates to "fifty-first place" or "fifty-first temple village." Over time, this name transmuted into the modern name Ambattur. Another explanation suggests the name comes from a collaboration of 51 small towns.

Industrial development in Ambattur began in the early post-World War II years. Along with Avadi and Ennore, it became part of the "auto belt" in the industrial north and west of Chennai. This growth was driven by the rise of the automobile industry in Madras. A key figure in this transformation was Sir Ivan Stedeford, the chairman of Tube Investments in the United Kingdom. He entered into a joint venture with A. M. Murugappa Chettiar of the Murugappa Group. This agreement was the first joint venture signed in South India after Independence. This partnership led to the 1951 establishment of the TI Cycle factory in a local mango grove. This factory began producing the 'Hercules India' bicycle. By 1954, the company met international quality standards and dropped 'India' from its name. Sir Ivan also signed a second joint venture in 1954 to create Tube Products India. This new factory was built on the site of a former British Government of Malaya Immigration Camp. Production began by 1956, sparking rapid growth across the Ambattur-Avadi industrial stretch.

The rapid population growth led to the creation of many public amenities. The TI company helped establish the Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar Higher Secondary School, a post office, and a bank. In 1966, a hospital was established between Ambattur and Avadi. This was made possible by a gift of approximately £5,000 from Sir Ivan. The facility was named the Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital in his honor. The area also features a branch library, which opened in May 1971. It was previously known as the Murugappa Library because it sits in a building owned by the A.M.M. Charities Trust.

A larger lake, the Puzhal eri, sits on the outskirts. The area also contains a stormwater drain network spanning 177.95 km. This is the largest network among the eight zones added to the Chennai Corporation in 2011. Various species of woodland and water birds frequent the local environment.
