They act as the top government representative in a foreign capital. Most ambassadors live in a special place called an embassy. This area usually includes an office and a home. The host country allows the ambassador to have control over this territory.

They also receive something called diplomatic immunity. This means they have personal safety and special rights while living abroad. This rule was made part of international law during the Congress of Vienna in 1815. It was later updated by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in 1961.

Ambassadors have several very important jobs to do. First, they protect citizens from their home country who are traveling abroad. They also help different nations trade goods with each other. This support helps the global economy grow through better business connections. Most importantly, ambassadors work to maintain peace between nations. They may help stop serious problems like international crime or human trafficking. These sensitive tasks are often done with the help of a nation's defense ministry.

The history of diplomacy goes back a long time. In Classical Greece, people used a system called Proxeny. In that system, a local citizen helped represent the interests of another city. The modern system we use today grew during the Italian Renaissance around AD 1300. In the 15th century, small Italian states used ambassadors as a political strategy. This helped them share information and stay safe from larger states. This practice eventually spread across Europe and changed how the world works.

There are different titles for different types of diplomats. An ambassador is the highest rank and represents their head of state. Some ambassadors carry the full title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Members of the Commonwealth of Nations use a different name called High Commissioners. They represent their government rather than a head of state. The Holy See uses the title nuncio for its diplomats. There is also an ambassador-at-large. This person can work in many different countries or a whole region instead of just one.

Learning about ambassadors helps us understand how the world stays connected. Even though our world feels smaller because of technology, nations still need these leaders. Ambassadors live in foreign lands for long periods to learn the local culture. This helps them become trusted and effective at their jobs. They can also be invited to special events. For example, an ambassador might welcome famous people to an embassy.
