An ambassador is a high-ranking diplomat who represents a sovereign state or an international organization. They serve as the resident representative of their own government in a foreign capital. This role is critical for maintaining official relations between different nations. An ambassador is the highest-ranking government representative stationed in a foreign country.

Most ambassadors live and work in a specific territory called an embassy. This area typically includes an official residence and a chancery, which is an office. The host country grants the embassy, its staff, and its vehicles diplomatic immunity. This legal status ensures that diplomats are afforded personal safety while serving abroad.

Diplomatic immunity is governed by international laws. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 helped formalize these diplomatic rights. Later, the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations updated these rules. These laws ensure that ambassadors can perform their duties without fear of local interference. Before an ambassador officially begins their work, the host government must approve them. In some instances, a host country may declare a diplomat persona non grata. This term means the person is considered unacceptable to the host nation. When this happens, the diplomat is usually recalled to their home country.

Ambassadors fulfill several essential roles to keep the international system functioning. One primary duty is to protect citizens from their home country who are traveling or living abroad. As modern technology makes the world feel smaller, having staff in foreign capitals is vital for travelers. Another role involves supporting global prosperity through international trade. Because most national economies are now part of a global economy, trade is increasing. Ambassadors act as intermediaries between cooperative businesses to help facilitate these deals. They also work toward the goal of international peace. This includes sensitive work to combat international terrorism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. These tasks often require coordination with a nation's head of state and defense ministry.

Diplomatic practices have evolved significantly over many centuries. In Classical Greece, a system called Proxeny was used. In this system, a local citizen of a host city acted on behalf of another city's interests. The modern diplomatic system we recognize today emerged during the Italian Renaissance around AD 1300. During the 15th century, ambassadors became a key political strategy in Italy. Many Italian states were small and vulnerable to much larger neighbors. They used ambassadors to gather information and protect their interests. This practice spread across Europe during the Italian Wars.

There are several distinct ranks and titles within the diplomatic hierarchy. Under the Vienna Convention, ambassadors hold the highest rank. They possess plenipotentiary powers, which means they have full authority to represent their government. Many modern ambassadors carry the full title of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Historically, this distinguished them from ordinary ambassadors who might only serve a specific mission. The Congress of Vienna also identified lower ranks, such as envoys or ministers. These individuals were accredited to heads of state but held less precedence than ambassadors. There are also chargés d'affaires, who are accredited to a minister of foreign affairs rather than a head of state.

Different organizations use unique terminology for their representatives. Members of the Commonwealth of Nations do not exchange ambassadors. Instead, they appoint High Commissioners to represent their governments. Because these nations often share a head of state, the process is more informal. The Holy See uses a different title, calling its diplomats Apostolic Nuncios. Resident Coordinators within the United Nations system also hold the same rank as ambassadors. Additionally, an ambassador-at-large may be appointed for special assignments. Unlike a resident ambassador, an ambassador-at-large can represent their country across several countries or a whole region.

Ambassadors must be deeply connected to the cultures they serve. Most ambassadors live in their assigned countries for long periods. This allows them to become acquainted with the local people and customs. Being culturally aware makes them more politically effective and trusted. Their work connects the high-level politics of governments to the daily realities of the world. They may even appear at public events to represent their nation's interests. For example, an ambassador might welcome notable figures to an embassy during major international events. This helps maintain the social and political ties that bind different nations together.
