The Commonwealth of Nations is an international association of 56 member states. Most members were once territories of the British Empire. Today, these nations are linked by historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. They often share the English language. The group works through several key institutions. The Commonwealth Secretariat manages relations between governments. Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Foundation focuses on relations between non-governmental groups.

Members do not have strict legal obligations to one another. However, they maintain various economic, judicial, and military arrangements. Instead of using traditional embassies, member countries represent each other through high commissions.

All members are guided by the Commonwealth Charter. This document promotes shared values like democracy and human rights. It also upholds the rule of law. The quadrennial Commonwealth Games serve as a major celebration of these values.

The group has a complex history of evolution. In 1917, Jan Smuts coined the term "the British Commonwealth of Nations." He envisioned new constitutional relations for the future. The term received statutory recognition in the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty. In that document, the phrase "British Commonwealth of Nations" replaced "British Empire."

The 1926 Balfour Declaration was another turning point. It declared that dominions were autonomous communities within the Empire. They were equal in status and not subordinate to one another. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 later formalized these relationships.

After the Second World War, the British Empire began to dismantle. This process is known as decolonization. As territories gained independence, the association changed its nature. In 1949, the London Declaration allowed India to remain a member as a republic. This was a major shift for the group. Consequently, the word "British" was removed from the official title.

The membership is divided into different political structures. The Head of the Commonwealth is currently King Charles III. He is the monarch of 15 member states, known as Commonwealth realms. However, 36 other members are republics. Five additional members have different monarchs entirely.

While Charles III became the head after the death of Elizabeth II, the position is not technically hereditary. It is a role of leadership within the association.

The Commonwealth is a very diverse organization. A majority of its members are small states. In fact, small island developing states make up almost half of the membership.

This diversity means the group includes many different economic and social realities. Some members focus on large-scale trade, while others focus on island development. This variety helps the group connect different parts of the world.

The Commonwealth relates to many broader global systems. In the mid-1950s, the United Kingdom considered joining the European Union. At that time, British trade with the Commonwealth was four times larger than trade with Europe. This shows how deeply connected the members are. The association remains a unique way for independent nations to maintain ties through shared history and values.
