Today, these nations are connected by many shared ties. They often use the English language to talk to one another. They also share many cultural and historical links. The group works together through different organizations. The Commonwealth Secretariat helps governments work together. The Commonwealth Foundation helps people in different nations connect.

Members of the Commonwealth do not have legal duties to each other. However, they do have many different types of arrangements. Some members have economic, judicial, or military ties. Instead of using embassies, member countries use high commissions to represent them.

All members follow the Commonwealth Charter. This document lists shared values like democracy and human rights. They also follow the rule of law. One way they celebrate these values is through the Commonwealth Games.

The group has a long and changing history. It grew from the British Empire as territories gained more power to rule themselves. In 1926, the Balfour Declaration said these areas were equal in status. The Statute of Westminster in 1931 made these rules official.

In 1949, the London Declaration changed things again. This allowed India to stay in the group as a republic. Because of this change, the word "British" was dropped from the name.

Many different types of leaders have shaped the Commonwealth. Jan Smuts helped create the term "British Commonwealth of Nations" in 1917. After World War II, the group changed as more lands became independent.

Queen Elizabeth II spoke about the group in 1953. She said it was built on friendship and loyalty. Today, King Charles III is the Head of the Commonwealth. He is the king of 15 member states called Commonwealth realms.

The other 36 members are republics. Five other members have different monarchs.

The Commonwealth is very diverse. A majority of the member countries are small states. In fact, almost half of the members are small island developing states.

This group includes many different kinds of places and people. Some members are very large, while others are quite small. Even though they are all different, they stay connected through their shared history. They continue to work together on many global goals. This makes the Commonwealth a unique group in our world.
