He spends his time thinking about very big questions. He studies the philosophy of religion and the rules of logic. He also studies epistemology, which is the study of how we know things. Many people call him a leading thinker regarding God. His work helps people explore how faith and reason work together. He has become one of the most important writers in his field.

Plantinga has developed several deep ideas about belief. One major idea is called Reformed epistemology. He argues that belief in God can be a "basic belief." This means a person might not need a long argument to believe. He says this belief can be rational and justified on its own. He also talks about something called "proper function." This is the idea that our minds must work the way they are supposed to. If our mental tools work well, we can reach true knowledge.

He also looks at the difficult problem of evil. Many people wonder how a good God can exist if there is suffering. Plantinga wrote a famous "free-will defense" to answer this. He suggests that a good God might want to create free creatures. For these creatures to be truly free, they must be able to choose. This means they could choose to do bad things instead of good. He argues that creating a world with moral good requires the possibility of moral evil.

Plantinga has had a very long and busy career.
