Alternative medicine

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Alternative medicine refers to a group of health practices and products. These methods aim to achieve healing effects similar to medical treatments. However, they lack biological plausibility, which means they do not align with known biological processes. They also lack testability and repeatable evidence of effectiveness. Because they do not use the scientific method, they are not part of evidence-based medicine.

Mainstream medicine, often called biomedicine, relies on the scientific method. Scientists use responsible and ethical clinical trials to test therapies. These trials produce repeatable evidence to show if a treatment works or has no effect. In contrast, alternative therapies often rely on unscientific sources. These can include personal testimonials, anecdotes, religion, or tradition. Some practices are based on superstition, belief in supernatural energies, or even fraud.

There are several ways these practices are categorized. Complementary medicine, or CM, involves using alternative methods alongside standard medical treatments. The goal is often to improve the effect of the primary treatment. Alternative medicine is defined as using these methods instead of standard treatments. Some people use the term integrative medicine, or IM, to describe combining both approaches. This is often seen in large medical centers like the Mayo Clinic or Stanford University.

Another specific type is functional medicine, or FM. This was created by Jeffrey Bland in the early 1990s. It is a form of alternative medicine that uses a model of disease based on "antecedents," "triggers," and "mediators." Practitioners use these to create a "matrix" for treatment. However, many experts describe functional medicine as pseudoscientific or a form of quackery. In the United States, FM practices have been ruled ineligible for certain medical course credits due to safety concerns.

History shows that the definition of medicine can change. If a method is proven to work through testing, it eventually becomes mainstream medicine. The terminology used for these practices often shifts to reflect better branding. For example, the United States National Institutes of Health has changed the name of its relevant department several times. It was once the Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM). It later became the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). It is now the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

Understanding why people feel better is a key part of this science. Much of the perceived effect comes from the placebo effect. This is when a person feels better simply because they believe a treatment will work. Another factor is the natural course of disease, where a condition resolves on its own. People often turn to alternative therapies when standard medicine fails. At that point, the condition is often at its worst and most likely to improve spontaneously.

However, turning to alternative medicine can lead to significant risks. For serious diseases like cancer or HIV infection, studies show much worse outcomes for patients using alternative therapies. This may happen because patients avoid effective, proven treatments. Some therapies are also actively harmful. For instance, consuming amygdalin can lead to cyanide poisoning. Ingesting hydrogen peroxide is another example of an actively harmful practice.

The alternative medicine sector is a highly profitable industry. It has a strong lobby and faces much less regulation than mainstream medicine. This affects how unproven treatments are marketed and sold. While billions of dollars have been spent studying these methods, few have produced positive results. Many methods have been thoroughly disproven by scientific research. The field continues to be a subject of debate between practitioners and medical scientists.
