He was born on July 24, 1860, in Ivančice. This town was in the Moravia region of the Austrian Empire. His family did not have much money. His father worked as a court usher. His mother was a miller's daughter. Mucha was the oldest of six children. All of his siblings had names starting with the letter "A." He was a very talented boy. He could sing as an alto and play the violin.

He also loved to draw with his left hand.

As he grew up, Mucha worked hard to become an artist. He first moved to Vienna in 1880. He worked as an apprentice making scenery for theaters. He learned a lot by visiting many museums and palaces. A fire in 1881 destroyed a major theater in Vienna. This made things hard for his company. Mucha had to travel north to Mikulov with very little money. There, he made portraits and art for tombstones. A nobleman named Count Eduard Khuen Belasi helped him. The Count paid for Mucha to study art in Munich.

Mucha moved to Munich in September 1885.

In 1887, Mucha moved to Paris to continue his training. He studied at schools like the Académie Colarossi. He lived in a boarding house for artists. Mucha began making drawings for many weekly magazines. These drawings helped him earn a regular income. He even bought his first camera and a harmonium. He used photography to help him make his art. He became friends with other famous people like Paul Gauguin. In 1894, he won a medal of honor at the Paris Salon of Artists. This was a very big moment for his career.

His life changed forever in late 1894. A famous actress named Sarah Bernhardt needed a new poster.

The poster was for a play called Gismonda. It had to be ready by New Year's Day. Mucha designed a huge poster over two meters high. It showed the actress in a beautiful Byzantine costume. He added a colorful arch behind her head. This looked like a halo. This special style became very famous. It helped make the Art Nouveau style popular around the world.

Later in his life, Mucha returned to his homeland. He was 57 years old when he began a new project. He spent many years painting twenty huge canvases. This series was called The Slav Epic. He painted these works between 1912 and 1926. The paintings showed the history of the Slavic peoples. Mucha believed this was his most important work. In 1928, he gave the entire series to the Czech nation. He wanted his art to honor his people and their history.
