Josef Hoffmann was a famous Austrian designer and architect. He believed that art should be part of everything we use. He did not like buildings with too much useless decoration. Instead, he wanted designs to be simple and clean. He loved using geometric shapes like squares and cubes. Because he used these shapes so much, people called him "Square Hoffmann."

To make his ideas real, Hoffmann helped start a group called the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903. This was a special workshop for artists and craftsmen. They worked together to create a "total work of art." This means every single thing in a room would match perfectly. They made furniture, lamps, glass, and even metal dishes. Some of these items were made by hand by skilled workers. Other items were made by machines in factories.

Hoffmann was born in 1870 in a place called Moravia. His father owned a textile factory and was a mayor. At first, his father wanted him to be a lawyer. However, Hoffmann chose to study art instead. He went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. There, he studied under famous architects like Otto Wagner. He also helped start a group called the Vienna Secession. This group helped show his new style to the whole world.

One of his most important buildings is the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. It was built for a man named Adolphe Stoclet between 1905 and 1911. The outside is covered in white Norwegian marble. It has a tall tower that is nearly twenty meters high. Inside, the rooms are filled with colorful mosaics by the artist Gustav Klimt. The floors use beautiful wood from far away. This palace is now a special UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many of Hoffmann's ideas are still around us today. You can see his designs in museums like the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He designed a famous chair called the Kubus Armchair in 1910. He also made a set of cutlery called Rundes Modell. A company called Alessi still makes this set today. It used to be made of silver, but now it is made of steel. His work shows how simple shapes can be very beautiful.
